Mind by Sharon Fisher
“Man is created by thought. What a man thinks upon that he becomes. Think you are strong, strong you become. Think you
are weak, weak you become, you can build your character as surely as a mason builds a wall”.
H.H. Swami Sivananda
Yoga psychology teaches that “thought is the architect of destiny.” They control our lives, mould our character and shape
our future. Yoga further teaches that mind is creative what we think that we become. Thought precedes action, first there is
a thought and from this thought comes action, so we can think of thoughts as moulds for our actions.
Therefore if one seeks to be holistically healthy and balanced, we must attempt to develop increased mental control. Mind it is that
is the creator of all our troubles and woes in life, the mischief mechanic, the author of adversity. Mind cannot be left unbridled. It
must be returned to its rightful position as our servant, and forced, coerced and persuaded to relinquish assumed position of master.
“As you think so you become”, is a psychological maxim. It is the greatest lesson that we can learn when attempting to develop
and improve the quality and potency of our character.
Every thought that passes through our mind is like a brick that contributes to the erection of the mental edifice
that we call our personality.
We can use the analogy of a barrel of water to illustrate how what we think becomes our personality. A barrel of
water is fastened by bolts to the ground to collect water. The barrel represents our body and the water is the mind. Everything we
have put into this barrel has become our personality. When the barrel of water is muddy it cannot be used for drinking purposes and,
as the barrel is fastened to the ground we cannot tip it over to empty the muddy water out but we can pour clean pure water into the
barrel and eventually it will become pure, and we will be able to drink it. The same is true with our personalities, we cannot tip
empty out all the thoughts which make up our personality, but we can systematically pour positive constructive thoughts into our
mind which will then create a positive and successful character. We must become intelligent and diligent observers of our thoughts
and feelings, and learn first hand about the positive and negative effects that they produce on us. We are to observe how the
thoughts of fear, worry, and anxiety, if continued, will eventually poison the vitality vigour, and health of the physical body. Noting
also, how conversely, the opposite thoughts of cheerfulness, optimism, courage, confidence, joy, and kindred thoughts promote
health, healing, and augment the body’s own natural defence mechanisms.
WE ARE CREATED BY THOUGHT, QUITE LITERALLY. Think that you are successful; and successful you
will become. Think that you are strong and strong you will become. Think that you are a weakling: and the
thought will create a weakling. Identify yourself with courage and you will become courageous. You are the
architect of your own destiny, the author of your own fate and fortune. We hold in our own hand or more correctly our mind, the
key that opens the golden door leading to happiness and success. We must Believe that we have within us the very source of all
power. We CAN do anything that we set our mind to, ---ANYTHING!
So from today (this moment) let’s begin to create the life we desire for ourselves, by simply changing our old habits of negative
thinking, worry, doubts, insecurity, fears to positive thoughts of self-confidence, courage, faith, strength, and happiness.
“Your greatest wealth, greatest asset, greatest power, greatest friend, greatest helper – is your mind. In your mind you
have an ally. In your mind you have an ever-ready friend, twenty-four hours of the day and night. Even when you are
alone, abandoned, helpless, you are in dire distress, in a dangerous predicament, ever-ready at hand is your mind to help
you, to guide you, to show you ways and means to overcome” H.H. Swami Chidananda Maharaj
