“The greatest discovery in life is to discover that our essential nature does not share the limits nor the destiny of the body and mind.” Rupert Spira
It is often mistakenly believed that meditation is only for those people who are on the so called 'spiritual path' This is an incorrect observation, as happiness or peace can be discovered only where there is mental control and meditation is an important element in establishing this.
Meditation is a mental hygiene, which helps in reducing anxiety and tension and offers relief from an over-active mind.
All happiness achieved through the mind and senses is temporary and fleeting.
To achieve the state of lasting happiness and peace, we must still the mind.
By turning the mind inwards, upon the self, we can deepen the experience of perfect concentration, which then becomes meditation.
Meditation is the practice by which there is constant observation of the mind. It means focusing the mind on one point, stilling the mind in order to perceive our true nature THE SELF. By stopping the waves of thought we come to understand our true nature and discover the wisdom and tranquillity within. In the same way that focusing the rays of the sun with a magnifying glass makes them hot enough to burn, so focusing the scattered rays of thought makes the mind penetrating and powerful. With the continued practice of meditation, we discover a greater sense of purpose and strength of will and our thinking becomes clearer and more concentrated.
There are many different types of meditation for example:
TM (Transcendental Meditation), Mindfulness Meditation, and from the Eastern tradition, Yogic meditation, Zen meditation, Buddhist meditation, and Taoist meditation.
All these practices have one thing in common - they all focus on quietening the turbulent mind.
WHY MEDITATE?
Medical researchers have been studying the effects of meditation for a long period of time, it has been scientifically shown to aid in the treatment of conditions as varied as cancer, sleep disorders, headaches, high blood pressure, chronic pain, depression aging etc.
Meditation acts as a very powerful tonic increasing the energy for the strengthening and improvement of all bodily functions.
It has been demonstrated to bestow a variety of mental benefits ie: Greater creativity, decreased anxiety and depression, irritability and moodiness. Improved learning ability and memory. Increased feelings of vitality and rejuvenation, happiness and emotional stability.
From a Yogic standpoint meditation helps greatly in making the mind calm and steady; leading to higher states of transpersonal consciousness, and brings about total psychological integration.
Yet the greatest and main benefit of meditation is the transcendental experience of the Absolute, our Inner Self.
Some testimonies from people who meditate (in order to respect peoples privacy names have been changed)
Paul: "Since meditating on a regular basis I find that I worry much less and have the strength to deal with the problems in my life."
Rosanna: "Some years back I was going through a crises in my life, and my mind was in constant turmoil, someone recommended I start meditating, I have found that mediation helped me through this difficult period and gave me the wisdom to deal with it in a constructive way. Also my mind is much calmer now. Since then I meditate daily as I find it brings peace and happiness in an otherwise stressful world."
Sally: "Not long after I started meditating I had an exceptional experience, while meditating I experienced immense joy from within, there were waves and waves of joy, and at the same time I knew that everything was perfect in the present moment, and that I had an abundance of wisdom within to assist me in my life. This feeling of joy continued for days, and helped me to understand that happiness truly comes from within; it has encouraged me to meditate on a daily basis."
David: "Since being retired and not working on a daily basis I found that I was not concentrating well and that I would forget things easily, since taking up meditation my concentration has improved immensely and so has my determination to find a purpose to my life."
The wonderful thing about meditation is that anyone can benefit from it, whatever your reasons may be; to improve concentration, for health benefits, to combat stress, to calm the mind, or for enhancing your spiritual practice
